United Healthcare

Design & Leadership for Choice Benefits Enrollment and the Individual Health Record

I led the XD team responsible for designing two significant experiences within MyUHC.com for members of UnitedHealthcare. My team included product designers, a data visualization designer, production designer, UX researcher, and mobile designer spread across Washington DC, Chicago, and San Francisco.

The work you see here was what I primarily executed myself.

As Creative Director I was responsible for:

Product design and direction for Choice Enrollment (benefits enrollment platform used by employer groups)

Product design and direction for launching the Individual Health Record, to be used by 20+ million UHC members

Hiring and developing members of my design team (totalling 7)

Prototyping a new health dashboard with two product executives that was presented to and used by the CEO of UnitedHealth Group and board of directors

Process and tools:

Working for UHC

UnitedHealth Group acquired Rally Health in 2017. Our team at Rally was to become the consumer facing design team that would replace Optum when it came to building products and experiences.

Choice Enrollment

This benefits enrollment platform originated two acquisitions prior when I built and branded Spotlite Choice. The Choice name carried through into UHC's ecosystem and at one point there was even a commercial on TV that featured it.

Our mission was to make the enrollment process as informative, frictionless, and easy as we could for UHC's members selecting their health, life, dental, vision, and voluntary insurance.

Individual Health Record

This new addition to MyUHC.com was aimed at putting every bit of a member's health data in their hands. I created detailed sections and scalable designs that would grow to include:

  • Health Summary
  • Care Team
  • Results (from labs and tests)
  • Prescriptions
  • Conditions
  • Procedures
  • Visits
  • Allergies
  • Caregivers

Choice Enrollment

These UI samples show how we took a conversational approach to one decision point at a time in order to keep the enrollee from becoming disoriented or overwhelmed. I used the progressive disclosure methodology to keep crucial information front and center, while expanding into detail was always a click away when needed.

Individual Health Record

This sample of work was for the foundational version of the Individual Health Record. If you have access to MyUHC.com personally, you may find that some of these UIs have been iterated on since 2019 when I departed United.
